Roys Peak offers a challenging yet rewarding 5-7 hour return hike near Wanaka, New Zealand, famous for its iconic panoramic views of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps. The track is a steep but well-maintained gravel path, requiring good physical fitness and sturdy footwear, and is not wheelchair accessible. While primarily a free, solo or small-group endeavor (a small carpark fee applies), visitors should be aware of key seasonal restrictions: the track is closed for lambing from October 1st to November 10th annually, and winter conditions (June-August) can introduce snow and ice, necessitating appropriate gear and caution. Starting early is advised to manage crowds and weather, and bringing ample water, layers, and sun protection is essential due to variable alpine conditions.
